There are two absolute truths in this world: Pineapple has every right to be on pizza, and posing for wedding photos will expose every insecurity you didn’t even know you had.
Sounds dramatic? Maybe—but after 8 years of photographing couples, I can confidently say most of the stress is from little things that are totally avoidable.
Of course, none of this involves you memorizing wedding pose styles. You have your wedding photographer for that.
So, what on earth could still cause disasters in your final gallery even after you got your wedding photographer locked down?
These 15 things couples forget when posing for wedding photos:
1. Having Fun
Some couples get so wrapped up in doing everything “right”, that they forget to have fun.
Your job is simple: laugh, joke, and soak up the moment. Let your photographer worry about everything else.
2. Smile and Show Teeth
A closed-mouth smile might feel safer if you’re self-conscious about your teeth, but it can make you look stiff or even upset, especially if you usually smile with teeth showing.
Laugh a little. Think about how you felt the first time you saw your partner REALLY smile. Let that moment shine when posing for wedding photos.
If your photographer asks you to whisper something silly to your partner, roll with it.
3. Hold the Bouquet Correctly
Your bouquet is an accessory, not a shield.
Holding it too high can block your dress, accessories, or posture, so keep your thumbs near your belly button or let it rest naturally at your side.
This simple adjustment makes a world of difference in your pre-wedding photoshoot.
4. Empty Your Pockets
If you have pants on (heyyy groomsmen), leave your essentials with someone you trust so you can focus on looking sharp. Or just leave it in the limo!
If you’re aiming for those sleek, artistic wedding photos couples dream of, then you should not forget this. If I am your photographer, I will help you all remember this.
5. Not to Pose Too Hard
Some couples forget not to pose too hard and they end up looking like mannequins off Temu (if you know, you know).
Call me biased, but as a candid wedding photographer, I believe your pictures should reflect how madly and breathlessly in love you are with your partner, period!
And what better wedding photography style to deliver this kind of experience? Candid, darling!
6. Get Close to Each Other
Wedding photos are about connection, and physical closeness makes all the difference.
Nothing says “awkward prom photo” like a couple standing miles apart or stiffly side by side.
Whether it’s holding hands, resting your head on your partner’s shoulder, or even just leaning in slightly, those small gestures will make your photos feel intimate and real.
7. Use Their Hands
Well, what can I say? Too much freedom can be a curse 😂.
Some couples forget to use their hands. I’m sure you can picture the outcome of that- bless their hearts and their photographer’s.
Jokes aside, the best thing couples should do to avoid their arms dangling awkwardly or the infamous T-rex hands is to give the hands a job.
Hold your partner’s hand, adjust your outfit, lightly touch your bouquet, or—when in doubt—rest one hand on your hip or thigh.
8. Breathe
Sometimes the pressure of the day can build up and couples forget to just… breathe. Do it with me now – inhale for four counts…… and exhale for four counts.
Unfortunately, frazzled and pinched up are both emotions that don’t photograph well.
So, take a quick break to re-center and remember why you are there. ❤️
9. Share Their Concerns With The Photographer
For example if you’re worried about a height difference, looking sleepy, or anything else, speak up before the big day.
A skilled candid wedding photographer (aka me!🤭) knows exactly how to acknowledge and kindly work around insecurities. If had a nickel for everytime someone told me they aren’t that comfortable in photos and then completely change their mind after working together, I would have about $20, give or take. 😉
Anything you feel iffy about, really. Just let me know, and I will guide you with prompts that spark genuine reactions, ensuring you look lively, radiant, and like YOU in every shot.
10. Stay Hydrated
Where is that 1 litre Stanley at?! Because, yes, hydration affects your photos.
Dehydration can lead to dry skin, dull energy, and even a fainting spell if you’re unlucky (and yes, that has happened). Make sure to drink water throughout the day (and the days before) to keep your energy up and your skin glowing.
Bonus tip: Keep some lip balm and/or gloss handy. Chapped lips? Not cute.
Timeless wedding photos are less about perfectly executed poses and more about letting the moments unfold authentically. And that’s where I flourish. Leave the posing up to me!
As a Calgary wedding photographer who also travels internationally for destination weddings, my goal isn’t just to deliver beautiful photos; it’s to make the process so effortless that you might forget the camera is even there.
Because when you’re free to be yourself, the photos practically take themselves (at least on your end 😉)
