Take a deep breath. I’m Caitlin, and for the next ten minutes, I’m swapping my Banff proposal photographer hat for my Banff proposal tour guide hat to give you all the insider tips you need to pull off your perfect Banff proposal.
Ready? Let’s dive in!
Banff Proposal topics in this article:
Why Banff
If you want a proposal that feels both epic and effortlessly YOU, Banff is the place.
Icefields. Glaciers. Snow capped, rugged mountains that feel like your own private cathedral.
Pine-scented crisp air. Lakes so turquoise they look like Gatorade. Banff is the scenery jackpot – everything is premium quality and you can’t make a wrong choice (especially after reading this guide 😉).
Creative Ideas for a Banff Proposal
It goes without saying that by proposing in Banff, you have most of your worries taken care of by Mother Nature.
However, you may also want to add your personal touch. And in this case, you should consider any of the following creative ideas for a Banff proposal:
Everyone wants that Moraine Lake proposal. And yes, it’s as stunning as the photos suggest. BUT (and this is a big but), you need to know the secrets to make it work:
BOOK YOUR $8 SHUTTLE TICKET IN ADVANCE- morning/sunrise is best (Click HERE to do so)
4:30 AM: Wake up (I can hear you groaning, cuz same)
5:00 AM: Question life choices while driving in dark
5:30 AM: Arrive to already busy parking lot to get on your shuttle (those Instagram influencers are dedicated)
6:00 AM: Witness the most spectacular sunrise of your life and immediately forgive me for the early wake-up call
The Secret Spot: Walk about 200m left of the main dock along the lakeshore trail. There’s a little clearing that’s perfect for proposals. Most tourists don’t venture past the rockpile, making this spot your own private paradise.
Pro Tip: I highly recommend pre-booking your shuttle ticket because things fill up FAST during peak season. You can bike or hike the road to the lake May-Oct but this would be quite the commitment early in the morning.
This is my go-to recommendation for proposing in Banff during winter. Ice castle? Check. Mountain backdrop? Check. Romantic? Triple check.
From December to March, the lake transforms into a winter wonderland complete with an ice castle and skating rink. But here’s what most people don’t know:
The Far Shore Secret: Everyone crowds near the Chateau. Walk 15-20 minutes along the lakeshore trail to the far end. You’ll find perfect proposal spots with the hotel and mountains as your backdrop.
Timing is Everything: Around 4 PM in the winter, the light hits the Victoria Glacier just right, creating this pink alpenglow that makes everything look magical.
Insider Hack: Book afternoon tea at the Chateau for after the proposal. It’s the perfect way to celebrate, warm up, and soak in those “just engaged” vibes.
This is one I usually keep for my VIP clients, but hey, you’re reading this far, so you deserve to know:
15 minutes from Banff
Waterfall backdrop
Usually empty after 4 PM
Natural stone platform perfect for getting down on one knee
Amazing acoustics if you want to arrange musicians (I know some great ones)
On the way to Two Jack Lake
There are several great stopping points on the road to Two Jack Lake after turning right off the road that goes to Lake Minnewanka. This is an area worth exploring, or I will just bring you there myself during your shoot:
Very private
Not busy
360 mountain views surrounding lush forests and sweeping fields
Convinced yet?? Cuz I am! 🤭
What Banff Proposal/ Engagement Bookings Cover
Should you hire a photographer while proposing in Banff? I’m obviously biased, but hear me out. I’ve seen proposals from both sides: the meticulously documented ones and the “my-cousin-tried-to-film-it-on-their-phone ones”. The key word is tried, just saying. 😅
You’re going to be in a love bubble. Time will literally feel like it’s stopping. Your hands might shake. You might even cry.
Having someone there who:
Knows exactly where to be
Knows how to be invisible until the perfect moment
Can handle any weather/lighting situation
Has backup plans for their backup plans …might be worth considering
With that said, below are the Banff (or elsewhere) proposal photography packages I offer:
✔ Explore package ($750):
1 hour session in the mountains
30+ edited high res images
Styling and location guidance

✔ Adventure package ($1100)

Another thing I’ve learned all these years of shooting in Banff, have backup plans for every weather scenario. Here’s a comprehensive list of weather-proof proposal locations you could check out:
Sudden Rain:
Primary Locations & Their Backups:
Moraine Lake → Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise Conservatory
Lake Louise Shoreline → Lake Louise Railway Station or Chateau
Vermillion Lakes → Banff Springs Hotel Interior
Tunnel Mountain → Cave and Basin Historic Site or the Rimrock hotel
Embrace the moody vibes! Some of my most dramatic and romantic shots come from rainy sessions
I’ll bring clear umbrellas that look gorgeous in photos
We can wait it out – mountain rain often comes unexpectedly but passes quickly.
Transportation Logistics
Well, the last thing you want is to be stressed about getting to your proposal spot or, worse, getting lost! After years of navigating Banff’s roads and trails, here’s your complete transportation blueprint:
Getting to Banff:
From Calgary International Airport:
Option 1: Rental Car (My Top Pick!)
Cost: $80-$150/day
Duration: 1.5 hours
Best for: Multi-day adventures
Option 2: Shuttle Service
Cost: $150- $200 per person
Duration: 2 hours
Pro tip: Book a private shuttle – shared ones make many stops!
Option 3: Private Luxury Transfer
Cost: $400-$600
Duration: 1.5 hours
Perks: include champagne service, photo stops, flexible timing and driver discretion (they’re in on the surprise!)
You can find a lot of info about transportation options in Banff here.
As for photography permits, they are pricey- but I will take care of them so don’t worry! That is included, free of charge, in my engagement photography packages for you.
What to Wear (By Season)
Before we move on to looking at how to avoid spoiling the surprise, here’s a couple quick notes on what to wear:
Layer up (weather changes quickly)
Avoid bulky jackets (hard to kneel)
Comfortable (but cute) shoes for walking
Coordinate colours with the season
Bring hand warmers in cold months
Think solid colours rather than patterns
Neutrals and whites stand out really nicely against the mountains
Seasonal Considerations:
Summer (June-August):
Pros: Warm weather, long daylight hours
Cons: Peak tourist season
Tip: Plan for early morning or late evening
Fall (September-October):
Pros: Fall colors, fewer crowds
Cons: Unpredictable weather
Perfect for photography
Winter (November-March):
Pros: Magical snow scenes, ice castles
Cons: Cold temperatures
Tip: Plan indoor backup location
Spring (April-May):
Pros: Fewer crowds, warming weather
Cons: Some locations still snow-covered
Good value for accommodations
Tips to Avoid Spoiling the Surprise
For finding the ring size:
“Borrow” a ring they currently wear- but make sure it is one for their fourth finger
Crafty? Trace the inner circle on paper
Ask their friends or family (my top suggestion)
Use a ring size app while they sleep (risky but thrilling haha)
Or… just shop for rings with them!
Photography Planning:
Best photo times: Golden hour (1 hour before sunset)
Sunrise! The early bird gets the worm (or the ring 🤪)
Additional tips
Book a “couples photoshoot” as cover. I can hide in plain sight or use telephoto lenses.
Consider hiring a videographer too (I have recommendations!)
Don’t suddenly become private with your phone (sudden password changes are sus).
Don’t overdress suspiciously on the D-day too.
Keep the ring box in a secure, unexpected place. Or not in a box at all!
Plan multiple possible dates to stay flexible.
Practice kneeling in your planned outfit.
Write your speech but don’t try to memorise it (hello unwanted stress).
Let me handle the in-person location scouting.
Post-Proposal Activities in Banff
Immediate Celebration Ideas:
Check out Rimrock hotel. They serve fabulous dinners there and the lounge is cozy. Plus, the spa was incredible – salt scrub and massage…a beautiful thing
Private champagne picnic (I know the perfect spots!)
Sunset helicopter tour
Luxury dinner reservations at a Banff gem
Whether you’re planning a helicopter proposal in Banff (fancy!), a sunrise surprise at Lake Louise, or a private moment at a hidden viewpoint, remember: the best proposals are the ones that feel true to your relationship and love story.
Even if you trip over your words, drop the ring in the snow (we’ll find it), or forget your carefully planned speech – it’ll be perfect because it’s yours.
Now go forth and propose!
